DNV GL publishes Maritime Impact Magazine

Published in time for the SMM 2014 in Hamburg, this second edition of DNV GL’s Maritime Impact Magazine for customers and stakeholders covers emerging trends in the shipping industry.

“The theme for this year’s SMM fair is ‘keeping the course’. In the business and regulatory climate we face today, the maritime industry may have to adjust the course. The recognition that some aspects of our business must change has never been so strong and we can see this in the shift towards alternative fuels and the central role of energy management,” says Tor E. Svensen, Chief Executive Officer of DNV GL Maritime.

The second issue of Maritime Impact picks up on the challenges and opportunities that the shipping industry faces today and includes the following topics:

  • size matters – what are the factors which limit a containership’s design and how does the shape of a vessel impact its performance;
  • greener shipping – which power sources will shape the future of the maritime industry;
  • large vessels – how do you store LNG-fuel on long range container ships. GTT, Hanjin and DNV GL are working on new solutions;
  • new designs – how did DNV GL experts use existing technology to develop a new vessel that is autonomous and fully battery powered;
  • propulsion technology – UASC prepares its mega boxers for the use LNG-Fuel;
  • performance management – DNV GL presents new software and a web-based portal that give shipping companies a fast track to an effective performance management system;
  • innovation – Wärtsilä finds smart solutions to saving space, cutting costs and simplifying the installation of LNG-propulsion systems.
