DOE grants rehearing on Corpus Christi LNG export authorization

The U.S. DOE said it has approved a rehearing of its final authorization to Houston-based Cheniere to export LNG to free trade agreement countries from its Corpus Christi project.

As DOE informed in its notice, Sierra Club submitted a request for rehearing of the order granting Cheniere authorization to export, over a period of 20 years, up to 767 billion cubic feet a year of LNG from the proposed Corpus Christi liquefaction and LNG export project near Corpus Christi, Texas.

DOE said that in order to afford additional time for consideration of the matters raised in Sierra Club’s request for rehearing, it has granted rehearing for the limited purpose of further consideration.

Cheniere’s Corpus Christi project that kicked off construction in May, is designed for up to three trains with production capacity of approx. 13.5 million tonnes per annum, three LNG storage tanks with capacity of about 10.1 Bcf, two LNG carrier docks and a 22-mile, 48″ natural gas supply pipeline.

The first train is expected to start operations as early as 2018, with the second train expected to commence operations approximately six to nine months thereafter. Total project cost is about $11.5 billion.
