Dominion set for Cove Point LNG pipeline maintenance

Dominion’s Cove Point LNG liquefaction project is set to have maintenance work done on the terminal’s natural gas pipeline throughout the month of May. 

According to the Calvert County Department of Public Safety, Division of Emergency Management a small amount of potentially odorized natural gas will be vented to the atmosphere, as part of the process.

These releases will take place during maintenance activities at the Lusby site tentatively scheduled for May 4, 11, 15 and 26, subject to weather conditions and other factors, the County’s notice shows.

Each venting will take 45 minutes or less to complete, with residents living near the LNG plant possibly hearing noise.

As a standard step to help minimize the potential odor, a citrus fragrance will be released during the venting.

At the beginning of April, the project filed a request for permission to export commissioning cargoes over a period of two years in the amount of 250 billion cubic feet, starting on the date of the first short-term export, which is expected to occur in 2017.

Once it is completed, the liquefaction facility will have the capacity to produce 5.25 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas per year.

The production capacity has been fully subscribed with Pacific Summit Energy, a U.S. unit of Sumitomo Corporation, as well as with GAIL Global (USA) LNG, a U.S. unit of the India’s utility GAIL, under 20-year terminal service agreements.
