Doosan: World’s First Low Speed Marine DF Engine Commercialized

On March 4, Doosan Engine announced the commercialization of a electronically-controlled low speed marine engine that can run on either heavy fuel oil or LNG. Company officials also said that a contract has been signed to supply five of the new engines to a US shipowner.

The main fuel will be LNG, which costs less than heavy fuel oil, which will play a supplementary role. As such, the dual-fuel (DF) marine engine will both lower shipping costs substantially and be friendlier to the environment, because burning LNG produces far lower levels of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide than heavy fuel oil does. Electronically-controlled low speed DF marine engines have been introduced in demonstrations several times until now, but Doosan Engine is the first to complete a model that will actually be put into service.

Doosan Engine, in cooperation with the marine engineering specialist DSEC, has concluded a package supply contract with TOTE Services, a US-based ship management company, for five of these 35,600bhp main propulsion engines. Delivery is scheduled to start in 2014, and the engines will be used to power 3,100TEU containerships.

Meanwhile, Doosan Engine previously completed a commercial version of DF engine for electric power generation, three of which will be used onboard each of the five containerships.

Doosan Engine Sales Division Chief Im Sang-rok says, “Dosan Engine produced the world’s first electronically-controlled slow speed diesel engine in 2004, and now we have won the contract to supply the first-ever electronically-controlled low-speed DR engine. These achievements demonstrate our outstanding technological capabilities in the area of large marine diesels. Today, maritime environmental regulations continue to be tightened around the world, and we now enjoy an advantageous position in the competition over new orders for environment-friendlier engines.”

Doosan Engine stands today as a world-class maker of engines. The business portfolio includes low speed and medium speed marine engines, marine engine parts and services, and diesel engines for power plants.
