GAIL extends LNG newbuilds tender

India’s GAIL has extended its deadline for the submission of bids for the charter of nine LNG carriers to December 4.

After Indian shipyards failed to confirm tie-ups with global experts in the business before the first deadline which was set for October 30, state-owned company decided to extend the submission period and give more time to local shipbuilders to find expert partners, according to local media reports.

Three of the nine vessels that will be chartered by GAIL for 20 years, and that will transport U.S. LNG to India have to be built by local shipyards.

Korean and Japanese shipyards seem to be unwilling to share the technology and expertise with Indian companies which prompted GAIL to extend the deadline and make certain changes to the tender.
