The 1,640 tonne Cygnus Alpha Wellhead topsides is now at Heerema’s Hartlepool yard loaded on a barge, waiting to be shipped to its North Sea destination.

In August 2012, GDF SUEZ E&P UK appointed Heerema Fabrication Group’s Hartlepool yard to build three topsides, a compression module, two bridges and a flare tower for the four offshore platforms for the $2 billion Cygnus development project.

Cygnus field,  the largest discovery in the Southern Gas Basin in more than 25 years, is located in the Southern North Sea, 150 kilometres off the coast of Lincolnshire. It has gross 2P reserves of approximately 18 billion cubic metres. First gas is expected in late 2015.

In December last year, Heerema Fabrication Group said that the Cygnus project would secure around 450 jobs in the local area and involve more than one million man hours of fabrication at Heerema’s Hartlepool site for the project during 2014.
