Iran, Iraq to Finalize Gas Deal Soon

Iraq’s Deputy Minister of Electricity Adel Hamid Mahdi said that Tehran and Baghdad will soon finalize a deal under which Iran will pump natural gas to its western neighbor to fuel power plants in the southern Iraqi province of Basra.

He went on to say that gas exports to Baghdad will begin next July, with an initial capacity of 7 million cubic meters per day, Iran’s SHANA news agency reported.

He stated that Iranian and Iraqi oil ministers agreed last month that a new pipeline will be constructed for exporting gas from Iran to Iraq.

It’s worth mentioning that, diversification of gas export routes to Europe is the other advantage of Iran-Iraq contract which in addition to Turkey will open a second route for gas transfer to Europe, an issue that has been approved by Iraqi and Syrian governments.
