Japan: Tokyo Gas Subsidiary to Build Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3

Tokyo Gas Subsidiary to Build Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3

Ohgishma Power, a subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, and Showa Shell Sekiyu, has decided today to construct the Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3.

Ohgishima Power Station supplies electric power fueled by natural gas, a clean and environmentally friendly energy source, and adopts an energy conserving gas turbine combined cycle. The operation started in March, 2010 for the Unit 1, and in July, 2010 for the Unit 2, with the combined generation capacity of approximately 814 MW.

In order to make a contribution on easing electricity supply and demand tightness by stable and efficient supply of electricity, Ohgishima Power is aiming to start construction work in November, 2012, and to commence operations in fiscal 2015 of the Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3, of which the environmental impact assessment procedures have already been completed. The Unit 3 is designed to have a maximum efficiency of approximately 58% (lower heating value basis, generating end) and a generating capacity of approximately 407 MW. The total capacity of Ohgishima Power Station will be approximately 1,221 MW with the commencement of the Unit 3.

Tokyo Gas has already announced “Challenge 2020 Vision”, where it will expand its domestic power generation capacity to 3,000 to 5,000 MW by 2020, including the other companies’ share, and the construction of the Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3 is a part of the initiatives to achieve that goal.

Showa Shell Group will further reinforce the power business, which was launched with approximately 200MW generation capacity as Independent Power Producer (IPP), by constructing the Ohgishima Power Station Unit 3, and make it a comparable pillar to the solar business in the energy solution business segment .

Tokyo Gas and Showa Shell will utilize the Ohgishima Power station to make a contribution on the environmentally friendly, stable, and efficient supply of electricity.
