Japan’s August LNG imports slightly up

Japan’s imports of liquefied natural gas rose 0.2 percent in August as compared to the same month a year ago.

The world’s largest buyer of the chilled gas imported 7.06 million tonnes of LNG last month, preliminary data from the Ministry of Finance reveals.

Japan paid 414,973 million yen for imports in August, down 30.2 percent on year, the data said.

LNG use by Japan’s ten independent regional electric power companies dropped 2.6 percent in August to 4.71 million tonnes.

The ten utilities purchased 4.87 million mt of LNG in August, down 2.5 percent from the same month last year, FEPC said.

Total electricity generated and purchased across the ten companies in August declined by 0.9 percent from a year earlier to 78.34 billion kWh.
