Lundin gains nod to drill Barents Sea well with ‘Leiv Eiriksson’

Oil company Lundin has received consent from the Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) for exploration drilling in the Barents Sea using the Leiv Eiriksson drilling rig. 

The well 7220/6-3 is located in production license 609 where Lundin is the operator with 40 percent interest. Other licensees are Idemitsu Petroleum Norge with 30 percent and DEA Norge with 30 percent.The license covers block 7220/6, which is around 190 km from Bjørnøya.

According to the safety authority, drilling will begin in July 2017 and last approx. 34 days, depending on whether a discovery is made.

The Leiv Eiriksson is a semi-submersible drilling rig of the SS Trosvik Bingo 9000 type, owned by Ocean Rig and operated by Rig Management Norway.

Leiv Eiriksson was issued with an Acknowledgement of Compliance (AoC) by the PSA in July 2008.
