MV Hanjin Geneva Runs Aground to Avoid Fishing Vessel

German flagged vessel MV Hanjin Geneva ran aground on a sand bar at the entrance of Prince Rupert Harbour, Port Authority reported yesterday.

The 278-meter long containership was on its way from Busan, South Korea to Prince Rupert Harbour, BC. The accident happened when the 6,826 dwt vessel manoeuvred to avoid collision with a small fishing vessel near the Harbour. According to Vancouver Sun, the vessel was piloted by a B.C. coastal pilot at the time of the incident.

Reportedly no one was injured and the Port Authority does not anticipate any damage on the vessel. Also there is no information on the status of the fishing vessel.

Fairview Container Terminal’s tugs assisted the refloating of the grounded vessel on Wednesday morning during high tide and the vessel was brought alongside Fairview Terminal for inspection. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators to the site of the grounding.
