Next Generation Ship Award Goes to TOTE’s LNG Containership, Norway

Next Generation Ship Award goes to TOTE's LNG Containership

A passenger ferry and a container ship, both powered by LNG, took the Nor-Shipping Energy Efficiency Award and Next Generation Ship Award respectively at the exhibition’s Opening Conference yesterday.

The Young Entrepreneur Award went to Tor M. Østervold of Norway’s ECOsubsea.

The Energy Efficiency Award (previously Clean Ship Award) went to Fjord Lines’ Stavangerfjord, the first international service passenger ferry to run on pure LNG engines. The award pays tribute to the ship that makes the greatest contribution towards energy efficiency in relation to its function or operation. Stavangerfjord operates as a night ferry on the Bergen-Stavanger-Hirtshals route in Norway and as a day ferry on the Hirtshals-Langesund route.

The Next Generation Ship Award went to the TOTE 3,100 TEU containership. This award recognizes the yard, designer or owner with the most promising design idea for a ship at sea in the coming decade. The winning vessel uses a unique propulsion system to drastically improve emissions per container. The first of two will be delivered and enter service in 2015 and 2016 – the first order for LNG-powered containerships.

Announcing the winner of this award, IMO Secretary-General Koji Sekimizu, said “energy efficiency has become the holy grail of ship design operations today.”

The new Young Entrepreneur Award went to Tor M. Østervold. This award honors an entrepreneur under 40 who has come up with innovative technical, logistical or commercial solutions – or who has taken on the industry or the environmental challenges it faces in a new way. Østervold devised a way to clean a ship’s hull without damaging paint and, at the same time, collect debris, thus reducing environmental harm.

Torkel Ugland, Chair of YoungShip International, who announced the young entrepreneur award, said “attracting and retaining talents” is vital for the future of shipping.

Østervold, in accepting his award, said “I hope this can be an inspiration for the young generation in shipping to seize the opportunities and challenges facing the shipping industry.”

An independent jury was set up for each award. Organizations represented include, among others, the IMO, DNV and The Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK).
