Philippines: PPA Plans to Upgrade Several Ports in 2012

The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) declared their intention to upgrade several ports in order to improve the country’s cargo volumes in 2012.

Raul T Santos, assistant general manager at PPA, said that the upgrading plans are in the pipeline for major ports such as Manila, Batangas, Iloilo, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, General Santos and Davao.

The prospect of the PPA project is to attract more cargo ships and companies to the Philippines.

Cargo volumes are planned to increase by 4.5% to 175.4m tons in 2012, which is slightly higher compared to 167.8m tons this year.

The country’s cargo reached the volume of 166.4m tons in 2010.
