Seatrium entrusts another Swiss firm with work on Brazil-bound FPSO duo

Singapore-based offshore, marine, and energy solutions provider Seatrium has hired Sulzer, a Switzerland-headquartered sustainable flow control innovation player, to provide pump packages for two next-generation floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, destined to be deployed at assets operated by Brazil’s state-owned energy giant Petrobras.

Sulzer has secured an order to supply multiple water injection packages to Seatrium for Petrobras’ FPSOs P-84 and P-85, months after the Singapore-headquartered firm tapped the Switzerland-based ABB to design and construct the topside and hullside electrical equipment, electrical substation automation, and eHouses for these units, which will work at the Atapu and Sépia fields, approximately 200 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

Sulzer claims it has met the strict acceptance criteria and application requirements of the end user for both FPSOs. The firm will deliver fully integrated pump skids designed to provide maximum efficiency in a compact footprint to support the construction of both vessels.

Each package incorporates three BB5 9.5 MW water injection pumps with two BB1 660 kW booster pumps, as well as two BB2 850 kW seawater booster pumps, said to be evolutions from the company’s proven hydraulic portfolio.

Bruno Antoniassi, Senior Manager of Sales and Application Engineering at Sulzer Brazil, commented: “Sulzer is proud to again collaborate with Petrobras and Seatrium, following our successes in the P-78, P-80 and P-83 projects. This latest order demonstrates our worldwide supply chain cooperation and engineering capacity.

“The global integration of our technical expertise in Switzerland and Germany, with our engineering capacity here in Brazil, means we can streamline the delivery of these packages to shipyards in Brazil, China and Singapore for multiple schedules.”

The skids will arrive complete with tested pumps, motors, couplings, and controls. Delivery is scheduled for early 2026, with advanced stages of testing already underway at Sulzer facilities.

Once the FPSOs are completed, they are anticipated to set new standards for efficiency and throughput, offering an oil production capacity of 225,000 barrels per day (bpd) and processing 10 million cubic meters of gas every day, while featuring efficient technologies that are estimated to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity significantly.

Seatrium scored an $8.15-billion contract in 2024 for these two ‘all-electric’ FPSOs that are expected to cut the GHG emissions footprint by 30% per barrel of oil produced once they come online in 2029, using electrically driven compressors and motors to produce 165 MW power generation capacity.

Antoniassi highlighted: “Prior to deployment, we will manufacture the pumps and integrate them here in Brazil, then carry out testing at full power. Following that, we will assist in installation, commissioning, and site integration tests. Once in the field, our team is ready to provide local aftermarket engineering support for the next 30 years in operation.

“Our global reach, local capabilities, strategic technical relationships and deep application understanding will ensure a state-of-the-art pump solution that meets the latest standards of both the EPC and end user.”
