Slow, But Sure Progress on Costa Concordia’s Hull Rotation

The parbuckling operation of the Costa Concordia wreck is going according to plan. Italian salvage officials confirmed at noon that the Costa Concordia hull had been rotated about 3 degrees, what is the equivalent of 1.5 – 2 metres.

The operation started at around 9.00 a.m. (0700 GMT), almost three hours later than expected, due to overnight bad weather conditions on the Giglio island.

According to the salvage officials the operation could take 10 to 12 hours.

This project is the most expensive and most sophisticated maritime wreck recovery ever performed and it has been estimated to be worth more than 600 million euros ($795 million). Currently, a team of salvage engineers and workers are on the site monitoring and stabilizing the wreck during the uprighting.
