SOCAR Kills Burning Well after Two Months (Azerbaijan)

Azerbaijan’s state-run oil company SOCAR, has extinguished the burning well at the Bulla Deniz field in the Caspian sea.

The well, which was on fire since August 17, was killed Wednesday, October 23, SOCAR said in a statement. Halliburton’s subsidiary, Boots & Coots, a pressure control company, helped with the operation.

To remind, the fire broke out at the location more than two months agoduring drilling operations at the No 90 exploration well at Bulla Deniz field. At approximately 23:00, natural gas started flowing uncontrollably from the well and, after half an hour, it caught fire.

The Bulla Deniz gas field, in production since 1975, is located near the Bulla Island in the Bay of Baku, Caspian Sea. The field was the largest gas discovery in Azerbaijan before discovery of the Shah Deniz gas field.
