COMMANDER Rotary vane installed on the Vectis Eagle

Last week, Jiangsu Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Ltd. launched the Vectis Eagle, the first vessel of the ‘Super Green 8500’ type. Dutch naval architect Groot Ship Design created the design for the innovative multipurpose cargo vessel, the 8500 dwt Super Green 8500, for Dutch/British Carisbrooke Shipping.

Van der Velden Barkemeyer GmbH delivered the COMMANDER™ rotary vane steering gear with industry leading life span for the Vectis Eagle. The advanced sealing technology of this stearing gear prevents internal leakage and ensures a greatly extended seal life. The sophisticated materials that are light, yet exceptionally strong. Also this type of steering gear has a compact design and only one moveable part, which provides low maintenance and trouble-free operation.

These properties make the Van der Velden COMMANDER™ rotary vane a popular type of stearing gear. In the last two years, more than 60 systems have been installed

Van der Velden® rudders and steering gear are recognised as being state-of–the-art. Wherever possible, products are integrated in a complete system with a tailor-made approach.

The original BARKE® rudder ensures excellent manoeuvrability and course keeping qualities. An innovative and sophisticated high-lift design results in minimal wear on the linkage and reduces noise and vibration. Also, turning circles are much smaller with the Van der Velden BARKE® flap type rudders, which gives the vessel a reduction in travel distance and fuel consumption.

This also counts for our TIMON rudder with slide-bar flap linkage which is easy to construct and maintain, so this rudder comes at a competitive price. The slim profile design ensures that the drag is low.

Both rudders can be provided with the Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™). A special lay-out modifies the profile above and below the centreline of the propeller in such a way that the effects of the rotation of the propeller slipstream are countered. Benefits are an extended life-span of rudders, low vibration and low noise levels.
