Statoil shuts down Hammerfest LNG plant

Statoil of Norway reportedly shut down its LNG processing facility at Melkoya due to a gas leak.

Statoil spokesman Oerjan Heradstveit told Reuters the situation is under control and the leak has been stopped.

The issue comes just days after Statoil revealed it plans to invest NOK20 billion (about US$2.9 billion) to expand its LNG export facility at Melkoya and to boost the plant’s operational life from 2035 to 2050.

Plant’s expansion would see an addition of a new pipeline and a compression facility.
