Swansea’s Tidal Project Faces Delay

The construction of a tidal lagoon in Swansea Bay has been delayed. The project was initially scheduled to enter the construction phase in spring next year, but that has now been pushed to 2017.

Tidal Lagoon Power, the company behind the project, said good progress has been made with its preferred construction partners and the project’s Advanced Works Phase is soon to be completed.

“The end of this phase of activity means that we’ll be ready to build once the remaining permissions have been secured and financial close with investors is achieved. The Board of Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc has concluded that this won’t be possible by year-end, ruling out the start of marine works next spring,” the company said Friday.

With the new timetable, financial close is expected next summer, after which the initial civil works on site should start, so the offshore works could get under way in spring 2017. Consequently, the project’s entering the operational phase has been moved to 2021.
