Tepco Considering LNG Imports from West Coast of North America

Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) of Japan is reportedly looking into a possibility to purchase LNG from export projects being developed on the west coast of North America.

The fact that supplies would not have to go through the Panama Canal makes projects on the west coast interesting and cheaper for Tepco, Bloomberg informs.

As a record importer of LNG, after the Fukushima disaster, Tepco now intends to buy up to 10 million tons of lean LNG a year from projects such as those fed by North American shale gas.

Tepco already agreed to buy a total of 1.2 million tons a year from Cameron liquefaction project run by Sempra Energy, through Mitsui & Co., and is in talks with the company to buy more LNG from the project.
