Tohoku Electric’s LNG consumption up in FY2015

Tohoku Electric of Japan informed on Tuesday its LNG consumption for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2016, reached 4.32 million tons.

This is an increase of 5.6 percent on the 4.08 million tons imported during the financial year 2014, a report by the company reveals.

The increase comes with the start of commercial operations at the company’s Shin-Sendai thermal power plant, that saw the startup of its 490 MW 3-1 LNG-fired unit in December 2015.

The second LNG-powered unit, the 3-2 facility has entered the testing phase in March this year and will add an additional 490 MW of production capacity.

Tohoku has long-term deals in place to purchase liquefied natural gas from the Wheatstone project in Australia and Cameron project in the United States. It has also signed a deal with Tokyo Electric Power Company to jointly work on the procurement of LNG.

The utility is also looking to diversify its procurement sources by securing supplies from the Mozambique LNG project.
