USA: County Receives Funding for Sheboygan River Dredging

The Sheboygan County has received a $1.5 million Department of Transportation grant to help in dredging the Sheboygan River and its inner harbor, reports sheboyganpress.com.

This grant will leverage nearly $14 million in other funding to pay for dredging the river to a depth of up to 16 feet deep that will allow cruise ships to dock there, as well as promote other economic development, officials say.

The City of Sheboygan and Sheboygan County are each contributing $250,000 to the inner harbor dredging, as well $100,000 each to dredging upstream of the Eighth Street bridge that will deepen the channel in that area to 10 feet. The dredging is expected to begin in the next few weeks and be completed by winter.

Gov. Scott Walker approved the grant Thursday, along with about $5.464 million in grants for similar work in Green Bay and Superior.
