Worldwide offshore rig count goes up in December

The worldwide offshore rig count in December 2018 increased by 30 units from November of the same year and increased by 49 units year-over-year, according to a Tuesday report by Baker Hughes, a GE company.

BHGE splits its rig counts into international and North America rig counts, which combined make the worldwide rig count.

The international offshore rig count for December 2018 was 234, up 28 from the 206 counted in November 2018, and up 43 from the 191 counted in December 2017.

Breaking it down by regions, Latin America lost one offshore rig during December 2018, which totaled 27 rigs, compared to the November count but gained one compared to December 2017.

In Europe, the offshore rig count for December was 38, an increase both sequentially and year-over-year. Namely, Europe’s offshore rig count in November 2018 was 27 and in December 2017 it was 30.

Africa had 15 offshore rigs in December 2018 which is one rig less from November 2018 but five rigs more compared to December 2017.

In the Middle East, December 2018 rig count amounted to 56 units, up six rigs from November 2018 and up 14 rigs from December 2018.

In the Asia Pacific region, the offshore rig count in December 2018 was 98, up 13 rigs from November of the same year, and up 15 units from December 2017.

The North American region gained two rigs in December 2018, totaling 26 units, compared to the November count and gained six units compared to December 2017.

The worldwide offshore rig count for December 2018 was 260, up 30 from the 230 counted in November 2018, and up 49 from 211 counted in December 2017.
