2H Offshore: New Fatigue Monitoring for Risers Systems

2H Offshore, in conjunction with BP, has developed a new fatigue monitoring methodology for drilling riser systems.

The new approach was developed using accumulated operator monitoring data and an innovative analytical solution, and accurately calculates fatigue damage made by both wave and VIV effects along the length of the riser and conductor.

Determining fatigue damage due to VIV has always been a key focus in structural monitoring, but because its effects on drilling riser structural response are often not well understood, and because direct wave loading and vessel motions also contribute to the total fatigue damage (often to a larger extent than VIV), it is essential to determine fatigue due to both wave and VIV fatigue in order to accurately assess the long-term integrity of a drilling riser.

This new methodology will be presented at the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore & Arctic Engineering (OMAE) on Monday, 14th June, in San Francisco.
