VIDEO: First mega module for Aasta Hansteen lifted into place

Hyundai Heavy Industries has lifted into place the first of four mega modules for the hull of Statoil’s Aasta Hansteen spar platform that will be located in the Norwegian Sea. 

According to the Norwegian oil and gas giant Statoil, once completed, the Aasta Hansteen spar platform will be the world’s largest platform of that kind with a total hull length of 195 meters.

On November 19, 2015, the first of four mega modules was lifted into place at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, using the yard’s new crane barge with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes.

The module weighs 2,200 tonnes and measures 50X20X25 metres.

The Norwegian oil major said that building mega modules at ground level that are subsequently lifted into position reduced required work overhead.

Statoil-operated Aasta Hansteen gas field will be developed using a floating integrated platform of the spar type and two subsea templates with a total of eight well slots.

Norwegian energy ministry recently said that first gas from the field would come later than originally expected due to delays in construction of the production platform. First gas is now expected in 2018, instead of 2017.

Statoil’s partners in the project are Wintershall, OMV and ConocoPhillips with 24%, 15% and 10% stake, respectively.
