Chile: Quintero to Expand Its LNG Terminal

LNG Quintero started the expansion project of the regasification capacity of its LNG terminal located in the bay of Quintero, Valparaíso Region.

The project involves the installation of a new train of vaporization, which will join the two currently in operation. After the expansion, the complex will increase by nearly 5 million m3/day capacity LNG regasification, reaching a total of about 15 million m3/day.

The Board approved Quintero LNG started the Terminal expansion project with the advanced purchase of critical equipment required (including a vaporizer, LNG pump, water pump, cables, cell, valves and spare parts) and started the EPC contract process, to be awarded during the second quarter of 2013, allowing the beginning of works in the shortest time possible.

The implementation of the project will have a total duration of 17 to 21 months, so additional regasification capacity would be available during the first half of 2014. The total project cost will be around U.S. $ 30 million.

The installation of new vaporization train was considered in the original design of the terminal, so it has an environmental approval and the necessary connections to integrate to existing installations of the plant, without involving a territorial expansion.

The expansion of the terminal’s regasification capacity was requested and committed for 20 years by LNG Chile, to meet the growing needs of their customers and future customers, through a public offering of natural gas and regasification capacity.

“This initiative will provide, in the short term, the necessary infrastructure to enable the arrival of a significant amount of additional natural gas to central Chile, which is very good news for the country in economic and environmental terms”, said the CEO of the company, Antonio Bacigalupo.
