Iran, Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project to Be Finalized by 2014

Iranian president Mahmud Ahmadinejad has said that Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project would be completed by 2014.

Ahmadinejad downplayed the financial constraints and US pressure on Islamabad to scrap the IP deal, and vowed to complete the pipeline project within the scheduled timeframe, AFP reported.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, he said: “we want to complete this project by 2014.”

“The portion of pipeline on Iranian side is about to be completed swiftly, while on Pakistan side the work will be completed soon,” he said, adding that Iran was also extending financial assistance to Pakistan for this purpose.

Under a contract between the two countries, Iran will export annually 7.8 billion cubic meters of gas to the neighboring country as of March 2014.

Pakistan will construct a 700km-long pipeline from its border while Iran would build a 300km long stretch of the pipeline from Iranshahr to the Pakistani border.
