BW LNG’s second vessel kicks off its gig with Norwegian energy giant

BW LNG, part of BW Group, has confirmed the start of work for the second of two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels with Norway’s state-owned energy giant Equinor.

Weeks after a naming ceremony was held for two LNG ships, BW Nivalis and BW Borealis, at the start of January 2026 at Hanwha Ocean’s Okpo Shipyard in South Korea, BW LNG announced the delivery of the second vessel from the Asian shipyard. The ship begun its long-term charter with Equinor on March 4, 2026.

The firm explains that the vessel was named after the Latin word for ‘northern.’ BW Borealis is described to feature a state-of-the-art design, enabling some of the industry’s lowest fuel consumption and emissions.

The ship has a carrying capacity of 174,000 cubic meters (cbm) and is equipped with ME-GI propulsion, a full reliquefaction system, shaft generators, and ALS.

The delivery of BW Borealis is said to mark BW LNG’s completion of the two-vessel program chartered to Equinor. The ship’s sister vessel, BW Nivalis, was delivered on February 4, 2026.

The company underlined: “This milestone underscores the strong collaboration between BW LNG and Hanwha Ocean, and heralds the start of a long-term partnership with Equinor.

“We look forward to supporting progress towards a low-carbon society through enduring partnerships, and safe and efficient vessel operations.”
