Alpha Process Controls targets FSRU market with new tech

Alpha Process Controls, part of the Knorr-Bremse Group-owned GT Group, has expanded into the floating storage and regasification units (FSRU) market with its emergency release collar (ERC) couplings.

The new technology will support the transfer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to FSRUs.

The company said that the development of new release coupling system capable of managing ship-to-ship transfer of LNG of 2,500 cubic meters per hour, as a response to the increase in the use of FSRUs as moored storage terminals.

When operating across multiple lines, the ERC systems will support the optimum transfer flow for an FSRU 10-12,000 cubic meters per hour.

The company has also developed a new ‘Y-piece’ unit to improve flow rates and reduce pressure drops, splitting the transfer through two 10-inch ERC couplings.

Speaking of the new development, John Lamb, the managing director of Alpha Process Controls said, “the flexibility of new or converted FSRU vessels is bringing LNG to more locations across the world. This is requiring the development of systems that can ensure LNG transfer can be made to these floating storage terminals in a safe manner.”

He noted that a drift-away scenario would have a significant impact on terminal operations, most notably from the release of LNG, which would impact the environment and, at a temperature of -162°C, damage vessels and equipment.

The new equipment aims to prevent such a scenario and improve operational safety and security of the fuel.
