API Welcomes Senate Bill on State Regulation of Hydraulic Fracturing

API President and CEO Jack Gerard said that the “Empower States Act” introduced in the Senate would benefit jobs and energy production by strongly encouraging continued responsible state regulation of hydraulic fracturing.

“Shale energy development has been a game-changer for economic growth, job creation and government revenue. Hydraulic fracturing has been used safely for more than 60 years, and the states are well-equipped to ensure that record continues. The Empower States Act recognizes states are getting the job done when it comes to robust regulation of hydraulic fracturing.

“The industry supports sensible and effective regulation, but an overlay of one-size-fits-all federal regulation or a maze of duplicative regulations from multiple agencies on hydraulic fracturing is unnecessary and counterproductive. It would increase costs, slow responsible development, and deny Americans the benefits of domestic crude oil and natural gas supplies while doing little or nothing for the environment.”

API represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America’s energy, supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested over $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.
