ASC Managing Director Gives Update on the AWD Project

ASC Managing Director and CEO, Steve Ludlam delivered a keynote address at the ADM Congress in Canberra yesterday stating that a significant amount of progress has been made on the Air Warfare Destroyer project.

The last of the 31 blocks for the first vessel of the project was erected at the end of last year. ASC’s shipyard has been operating 24 hours a day with a morning; afternoon; and 12 hour shift. Currently there is a great deal of work underway on the internal fit – out to get as much equipment as possible loaded to support the planned float – off later this year.

Mr. Ludlam also reminded that ASC’s shipyard, a few weeks ago, held a keel laying ceremony for the second vessel. Construction of the hull blocks for the third ship has commenced at BAE Systems, Forgacs and Navantia.

Australia’s new Air Warfare Destroyers will be named HMAS Hobart, HMAS Brisbane and HMAS Sydney ensuring the three ships reflect a rich history of service. When the AWDs are delivered to the Royal Australian Navy they will be in service, defending and supporting Australian interests, for more than 30 years.
