Austal’s Philippines Yard Hands Over ‘Aremiti Ferry 2’

Austal last week delivered a highly efficient medium speed ferry to the leading French Polynesian operator, SNC Aremiti Ferry. The 80 metre ferry was constructed at Austal’s Philippines shipyard.

This is the fourth vessel Austal has sold to Aremiti and its associated companies. The new ‘Aremiti Ferry 2’ will operate alongside an existing Austal catamaran between the islands of Tahiti and Moorea, expanding access to the area for locals, tourists and business operators.

Austal Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bellamy said it was a significant achievement for the Philippines shipyard to successfully construct its largest vessel since commencing operations in February 2012.

“I am proud that Austal’s team in the Philippines has been able to deliver this ferry to our repeat customer, despite the challenges faced, including ensuring the safety of the vessel, shipyard, and our staff during Typhoon Haiyan,” Mr Bellamy said.

“We are continuing to progress with construction of four wind farm vessels at the Philippines shipyard and are pursuing ongoing opportunities in commercial vessels and the wind farm vessel market.”

With a capacity for up to 967 passengers and up to 146 cars, or a mix of cars and trucks, the new ferry will be French-flagged and is designed to meet EU domestic voyage rule requirements. In addition to enabling local tourism and personal transport, the ferry will support inter-island trade.

The ferry is powered by four MTU 16V 4000 M53R engines coupled to fixed pitch propellers. Four rudders and twin bow thrusters combine to provide excellent maneuverability. The Austal ride control system comprising of forward T-foils and aft interceptors will enhance passenger comfort by reducing vessel motions, and enables trim to be adjusted to enhance operating efficiency.
