Australia: ABB Opens New Facility in Queensland

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced the opening of a new facility dedicated to supporting the resource sectors in Queensland.

The facility, situated at Milton in Brisbane, further extends ABB’s commitment to the mining and oil & gas sectors and adds to the already significant presence in the state, underscoring the company’s long-term support for industry in the region.

The new Milton site was officially opened by Veli-Matti Reinkkala, global head of ABB’s Process Automation division on August 24, 2011. Axel Kuhr, country manager for ABB in Australia addressed attendees at the opening and explained the company’s strategy for increasing the power and automation engineering capability in Queensland.

Axel said: “Australia’s mining boom coupled with the fast developing liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry in Queensland will play a significant role in ABB Australia’s ongoing success. Globally, we are well known for setting up the necessary local infrastructure to support large projects and this new office will operate as our primary engineering support centre for QGC’s new coal seam gas project.

Earlier this year ABB was awarded an US$58 million order to provide integrated automation, safety and telecommunications systems and related equipment for the new upstream coal seam gas project in Queensland. ABB has been appointed the main automation contractor for the project by QGC Pty Limited, a BG Group business. QGC’s Queensland Curtis LNG Project is one of Australia’s largest capital infrastructure projects.

ABB enhanced its ability to provide asset management solutions and services when it completed its acquisition of Brisbane-based Mincom in August 2011. The acquisition expands ABB’s presence in Australia and establishes the Group as a leader in enterprise asset management (EAM) software and solutions. Solutions for the resources sector cover the entire spectrum of processes from exploration to logistics, from sales to asset maintenance.

With more than 700 employees based in Queensland, ABB has been actively providing lifecycle services to a number of major mining clients and is currently providing essential solutions such as mine hoists, conveyor systems, electrification systems and specialty engineering for the industry. Other core offerings in Queensland include transformer manufacture and servicing, electric motor refurbishment, and the sale of high, medium and low voltage products.
