British National Dies in ‘Sevan Brasil’ Accident

An offshore worker died in an accident earlier this week on a drilling rig off the coast of Brazil.

The news was first reported by the Brazilian oil workers union Federação Única dos Petroleiros. In a statement issued Tuesday, the union said the British national, 36,  sustained fatal injuries Monday, January 6th, while conducting maintenance work on board the Sevan Brasil ultra deepwater drilling rig in the Espirito Santo basin. The rig is under a long-term contract with the country’s largest oil company Petrobras.

Yesterday, Sevan Drilling, a Norway-based drilling contractor and the owner of the rig, confirmed the information in an e-mail sent to Offshore Energy Today.

Scott McReaken, the recently appointed CEO of Sevan Drilling said: “The family of the deceased has been informed and our first priority is to provide support to the family and crew of the Sevan Brasil at this very difficult time. We are providing assistance to the local authorities who will be conducting an investigation into the incident. We have initiated our own internal investigation to understand how this tragic incident occurred.”

According to the oil workers union this is the fifth accident that took place in the sector since the beginning of the year. Federação Única dos Petroleiros said two workers were killed while four others were seriously injured since January 1, 2014.
