Cement Carrier Cemfjord Sinks Off Pentland Firth

The wreck of the cement carrier Cemfjord has been located on the seabed in Pentland Firth where it sank with eight men on board.

The vessel capsized in a storm on Friday, January 02, 2015.

The local ferry spotted Cemfjord’s upturned hull on Saturday, after which a major search and rescue operation was launched to find the crew of the vessel.

The crew consisted of seven Polish seafarers and one Filipino mariner.

Despite the best efforts of the search teams, no crew members were found, Brise Hamburg wrote on their website.

The vessel had been sailing from Aalborg in Denmark to Runcorn in Cheshire when it sank. It had been due to arrive on Monday.

Investigations into the cause of the accident are being carried out by Brise, the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch and the flag of registry, Cyprus.
