On August 1st 2012, CIC Changxing Shipyard completed a sound repair of MV GRAIN EXPRESS, the bulk carrier which belongs to a Greek company.
The main repair job included the chemical clean of M/E air cooler & the fresh generator evaporator, the repair of pilot ladder and accommodation ladder, the renewal of H/C rubber packing, the operation chain & the H/C steel, the repair of accommodation ladder gear box and the localization of three new fuel oil pumps in E/R.
The subject vessel arrived at the shipyard on July 23nd with one week repair period so the daily work had to flow strictly as planned. During the repair of accommodation ladder gear box the crew said there was great noise when the gear box was running. The yard’s workers dismantled the gear box and found the shaft had been deformed because of the corrosion.
Since the yard could not make this kind of shaft so it had to be sent out for fabrication.
