CIMC Raffles has begun the construction of Frigstad’s second ultra-deepwater submersible drilling rig.

The steel cutting for UDW rig ‘Beta’ was held today, 28th February, at the CIMC Haiyang yard. The rig is based on the D90 design developed by Frigstad Engineering.

Frigstad Deepwater Rig Beta belongs to the latest generation of ultra-deepwater semi-submersible drilling rigs. It is the second to be constructed by CIMC Raffles for Frigstad Deepwater Company, and also the tenth submersible drilling rig that CIMC Raffles has built so far.

The drilling rig is 177 meters long, 92.7 meters wide, with the height of 118 meters. It has a maximum displacement of 70000 tons, maximum operating water depth of 12000 feet (3658 meters), drilling depth of 50000 feet (15250 meters) and dual top drives load of 1250sh.tons. Besides, it is equipped with DP3 dynamic positioning system.

Delivery of the DNV-classed rig is scheduled for the first half of 2016.
