Cobra Cable Makes Landfall in Denmark (VIDEO)

The first subsea section of the 325-kilometre-long Cobra cable interconnector between Denmark and the Netherlands has made landfall on the Danish island of Fanø, Energinet reports.

The High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector, which will have a capacity of approximately 700MW, will run from Eemshaven in the Netherlands via Germany to Endrup in Denmark. The interconnector is a joint project between Energinet and Dutch transmission systems operator TenneT.

The first section made landfall on Fanø on 5 November. The cable was pulled in with the assistance of Assodivers’ cable lay barge Atalanti.

Following the completion of the pull-in operations, the Atalanti has proceeded with the installation of the 37-kilometre cable section. The second section of the submarine cable with a length of 56km will be installed at the beginning of December, Poul Erik Pedersen, Project Manager, said.

The Cobra cable will allow for exchange of renewable energy between the two countries, and it has been designed to enable a connection to an offshore wind farm at a later stage. The interconnector is scheduled for commissioning in 2019.
