Crane Collapses at Sembcorp Shipyard, Damages Rig

A crane collapse at the Sembcorp Marine Tanjong Kling shipyard in Singapore caused damage to a jackup rig under construction on February 28.

According to the vessel’s owner, the offshore drilling company Noble Corporation, there were reports of minor injuries to some shipyard personnel.

Namely, three workers nearby and onboard the Noble Lloyd Noble sustained minor injuries in the incident, Sembcorp confirmed, adding that all workers onboard the rig at the time of the incident were evacuated.

The new rig Noble Lloyd Noble, currently in its late stages of construction, has suffered damages to at least one of its areas, as well as damages to one of the vessel’s cranes.

“We believe the damage to be minor and that the rig’s scheduled delivery in the second quarter of 2016 will not be affected,” Sembcorp said.

An investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower.

Noble said that access to the rig is limited during the initial phase of the investigation.
