Crewman Seriously Injured in Stabbing Incident off Ireland

A Ukrainian crew member of Liberia-flagged Afric Star was seriously injured by another crew member, also a Ukrainian, in a stabbing incident on September 18th off Irish coast, while the ship was en route from Saint Petersburg to Cristabel, Panama, the Irish media reported.


The master asked for medical assistance from the Irish Coast Guard and the 26-year old crewman was soon airlifted by the coast guard helicopter some 240 miles off Mayo coast, Ireland. The injured crew is said to have sustained severe chest wounds.

The 32-year-old attacker was detained onboard and was arrested on Friday morning by the police at  Killybegs, Ireland, where the vessel proceeded after the attack.

The wounded crew member was last reported to be in a critical condition.

The vessel is owned by Star Reefers.

Investigation into the incident is underway by Gardaí in Killybegs.
