CSL Bulk Carrier Aground in St. Lawrence River Channel

The 37,690 dwt bulk carrier Whitefish Bay ran aground in the vicinity of Hamilton Islands in the St. Lawrence River Channel near Cornwall, Ontario on July 12 due to  a power failure, according to the Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.

There were no injuries, water ingress or pollution reported following the incident, which occurred at approximately 18:10 EDT, Montreal-based shipping company Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) told World Maritime News.

Reports and preliminary inspection also indicate that there is no structural damage and no impact on marine traffic.

Vessel operators/owners are considering options for towing or refloating pending further assessments.

The 225-meter long vessel reportedly hit the rocks and the river bottom, after which the captain attempted to turn the ship around. As the attempt failed, the vessel dropped anchors.

According to AIS data provided by Marine Traffic, the 2013-built vessel is still aground.

The ship left the Canadian port of Wellar on Monday and was en route to the port of Belledune at the time of the incident.
