Decom Offshore 2014: Realising opportunities for all

With a projected £40.6bn spend over the next 25 years in the UKCS alone, and a significant potential for jobs to be sustained or created, decommissioning is understandably high on the agenda across the oil and gas industry.

The scale of these figures indicates that it is essential for cross-sector understanding, collaboration and a sharing of knowledge to ensure that the industry is prepared for – and will make the absolute most of – the decommissioning era when it fully arrives.

Decom North Sea’s major conference, Decom Offshore 2014, promises to provide the essential arena to engender the spirit of collaboration.

The one-day event in Aberdeen, entitled Realising Opportunities For All, will take place on Tuesday May 27. The objective of the event is to encourage both operators and supply chain to engage and discuss how they can collaborate to address the forthcoming challenges related to decommissioning.

The conference launched to great success in 2013, as a way to bring together professionals from all tiers of the decommissioning industry to discuss and debate the most effective ways forward for decommissioning. This year, the supply chain will hear about the challenges Operators and Tier 1 Contractors are currently facing in the context of decommissioning, and in turn, will have the opportunity to inform the Operators and Tier 1 Contractors of the solutions and techniques the supply chain can offer to address those challenges.

Brian Nixon, DNS chief executive, said: “Whilst nobody in the industry wishes to see decommissioning take place before it is absolutely necessary, it is vital that work is done now, to ensure that sharing, collaboration and innovation are the standard, with a drive towards efficiency across the sector – before the full effects of decommissioning are felt. The purpose of Decom Offshore is to bring together all relevant sectors of the industry to hold a wide discussion on how future decommissioning activity can be undertaken in the most efficient way and where the opportunities lie for future innovations and ideas.

“From large operators to small supply companies, there is a niche for everyone in the decommissioning sector, and we aim to advise on the challenges facing the sector as well as share news on technologies and innovations to addresses these challenges.”

The event’s comprehensive schedule will include a mix of interactive plenary sessions, exhibition space and the opportunity for 1-to-1 introductions. In addition to networking and open dialogue, the day will feature conference sessions on Strategy and Planning, Learning from Other Sectors and Supply Chain Opportunities from Contractors.
Sarah Davie, commercial director of Swire Oilfield Services – the event’s lanyard sponsor – said: “Decom Offshore 2014 is a vital part of the Decommissioning industry’s strategic message that new ideas from other sectors can play a valid and innovative part in the decommissioning process.
“Swire Oilfield Services is delighted to be supporting this conference and in particular a session that offers speakers from the military, semi-conductor and nuclear sectors, illustrating the ways in which the industry can benefit enormously from transferable concepts and technology.”

The evening prior to the conference, DNS will host a networking reception, which will take place at Aberdeen’s Maritime Museum.

DNS has grown since its inception in 2010 to have more than 220 members drawn from operators, major contractors, service specialists and technology developers. DNS was set up to tackle the main areas of weakness, which are inhibiting decommissioning supply-chain capability.
