Dredging the Arthur Kill Federal Navigation Channel

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has just released a photo of a clamshell dredge working in the Arthur Kill Federal Navigation Channel.

The dredge is deepening the Arthur Kill Channel off of the New York Container Terminal, N.Y.C.

The project provides for deepening the channel from its confluence with the Kill Van Kull Channel to the New York Container Terminal, Richmond County N.Y./Borough of Staten Island, N.Y.C., and from the New York Container Terminal to the Conoco Phillips 66 (Tosco) Oil Terminal in Linden, Union County, New Jersey.

Deepening the Arthur Kill Channel is part of the overall $1.6 billion worth New York and New Jersey Harbor Dredging project to deepen certain Federal Navigation channels to 50 feet in order to allow the safe and economically efficient passage of the newest container ships serving the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The project goal is to complete the 50 foot deepening and turn over to an established dredging maintenance program, the same time as the wider, deeper Panama Canal will accommodate larger ships.
