Dual-Fuel Dredger Conducts LNG Bunkering in Germany

Germany witnessed its largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operation on February 12 when the dual-fuel hopper dredger Scheldt River received fuel at Brunsbüttel Ports.

During the operation, the trailing suction hopper dredger, owned by Belgian DEME group, received around 85 tonnes of the environmentally friendly fuel.

The bunker supplier, Nauticor GmbH & Co. KG of Hamburg, delivered the fuel in five trucks, two of which were unloaded simultaneously.

Scheldt River, which is currently performing maintenance dredging works on the river Elbe between Cuxhaven and Wedel, is expected to carry out further LNG bunkering at Brunsbüttel Ports.

The 8,400 m³ TSHD Scheldt River is the second dredger in the DEME fleet equipped with dual- fuel engines. The vessel can operate in LNG mode, reducing carbon dioxide emissions, almost eliminating sulphur, NOx and particle emissions.
