Fednav Receives Inaugural Lloyd's List Environment Award

This award recognizes a contribution by an individual, company, or association towards an improved outcome for the environment from the maritime industry. The award was also won by North American Marine Environmental Protection Association whose commitment is to preserve and protect the marine environment.

Fednav is Canada’s leading ocean-going, dry-bulk shipowning and chartering group and the largest operator of ice-class dry bulk carriers worldwide. The company recently ordered twelve new highly efficient handysize ships for delivery in 2015 and 2016. These vessels will produce 28% less GHG emissions than vessels built for Fednav 10 years ago, ships among the highest performers of their time. Additionally, the new engines will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 33%. These vessels will all receive the Clean-Design notation from DNV GL, the world’s largest ship and offshore classification society.

In 2008, Fednav was the first shipping company in Canada to publicly publish an environmental policy for its vessels that included annual targets and expected results. Held to the highest of standards, Fednav’s fleet is regularly inspected by an independent third-party verification body that provides detailed inspection reports under an Environmental, Quality, and Safety Inspection or EQSI system.

Fednav is a founding member of Green Marine, a voluntary, bi-national programme aimed at strengthening the marine industry’s environmental performance, raising awareness of the industry’s activities, and assuring the highest certification rankings. Parallel to these actions is a company-wide initiative to integrate a workplace environmental policy whose mandate to reduce energy consumption and waste, and encouraging the use of sustainable products and services.

Paul Pathy, President and Co-CEO affirms, “We believe in integrating social, environmental, and economic concerns in our activities and interactions. We stand firmly behind our promise to deliver a higher standard of quality, customer service, and commitment to reducing our environmental footprint.”

“Fednav wishes to thank its employees, ship managers, customers, and suppliers for their contribution and continued support, and of course, Lloyd’s List’s jury for awarding this distinction to the company,” the company said in a press release. The Lloyds’ List North American Maritime Awards recognize excellence across the range of activities within the shipping world.
