Finland: Eckero Line to Acquire New Ship for Helsinki-Tallinn Route

Eckero Line will reportedly obtain Moby Freedom, a new ship for Helsinki-Tallinn route, which will replace the old Norlandia as soon as she retires.

Constructed in South Korea by DSME in 2001, Moby is currently operating in Italy between Rome and Sardinia. Prior to entering service, Moby will undergo an extensive conversion so as to meet her new owner’s requirements. This investment will reach 90 million € (approx USD 119.1 million) including the renovation and adjustment. It still remains unknown where the operations will take place.

The 175 m vessel has the accommodation capacity for 2,080 passengers and 665 cars or 100 load units. With the output of 50,400 kW (68,500 hp), she will also demonstrate competitive speed resources.

Following these activities, Moby will be transported to Finland during summer and she will start operating on the new route in autumn 2012.

1 Euro = 1.32400 U.S. dollars
