Gasconsult of UK Patents New Liquefaction Technology

Gasconsult Limited, the UK LNG technology company, announced the award of a patent for its new ZR-LNGTM liquefaction process. This complements its existing natural gas liquefaction patent portfolio.

ZR-LNGTM has best in class energy efficiency for mid-scale applications. Specific power consumption for the liquefaction section itself will typically be in the range from 310-350 kWh/t of LNG, marginally higher than current base load plants but significantly better than single mixed refrigerant cycles (350-400) and dual nitrogen expander cycle technology (400-500).

Commenting on the patent award Gasconsult CEO Bill Howe stated ‘this marks a major step forward for Gasconsult. The world is seeking sustainability and the maximum utilisation of resources. ZR-LNGTM not only has best in class energy efficiency for mid-scale applications but also has the lowest capital cost. ZR-LNGTM represents more than a nuanced incremental improvement; it is a step change in liquefaction economics for mid-scale plants.’

The capital efficiency of the technology combined with its low operating cost opens the possibility of monetising smaller gas fields unable to support the cost of sophisticated base load technology. Having a low equipment count, small foot print, low weight and no requirement for storage of flammable refrigerants the process is particularly suited to the floating LNG concept.

Gasconsult also see opportunities for the technology in ‘end of pipe’ applications to make LNG for heavy goods vehicles and as a marine fuel; providing a lower cost environmentally benign fuel for these applications.

Gasconsult is seeking business partnerships or to appoint licensors in key LNG production markets.
