Gazprom, Mitsui talk LNG cooperation prospects

Gazprom’s head, Alexey Miller, discussed the prospects of partnership in the LNG sector with Mitsui’s chairman Masami Iijima during a meeting on Wednesday. 

The two leaders focused discussions on the joint efforts in expanding the Sakhalin II facility through the construction of a third liquefaction train, Gazprom said in its statement.

In addition, discussions touched on the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on LNG bunkering studies, Gazprom and Mitsui signed in September.

Under the MOU, the companies will conduct feasibility and marketing studies with regard to the bunkering of marine vessels with LNG in Russia’s Far East and the Asia-Pacific region.

The Sakhalin II LNG project is operated by Sakhalin Energy in which Gazprom owns 50 per cent plus one share while Mitsui owns 12.5 percent.

The remaining shareholders in the project that dispatched 166 LNG cargoes in 2015 are Shell with 27.5 percent minus one share and Mitsubishi with 10 percent.
