Gazprom talks LNG cooperation with Japan

Head of the Russian Gazprom, Alexey Miller on Wednesday met with Japanese ambassador to Russia, Toyohisa Kozuki to discuss the relations between Gazprom and Japanese energy companies.

Gazprom revealed in a statement that the meeting focused on broader cooperation in the LNG sector, including through the expansion of the Sakhalin II project.

Japanese companies Mitsui and Mitsubishi hold a 12.5 percent and a 10 percent stake, respectively, in the Sakhalin II project.

In June last year, the majority holder Gazprom with a 50 percent plus one share and Shell, a holder of a 27.5 percent stake in the project agreed to expand the plant’s capacity.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to build the third liquefaction train that would raise the 9.6 million ton of LNG per year facility’s production capacity by 5.4 mtpa.
