GDF Suez buys stake in North Sea block (Norway)

GDF SUEZ will acquire a 10% share in the licence PL 420, offshore Norway, from Statoil. The area is situated in the North Sea, approximately 45 kilometres from shore and 20 kilometres southwest of the Gjøa field.

RWE Dea Norge as the operator of the block, began drilling at the well Atlas exploration well in the license on November 4. The semi-submersible rig ”Leiv Eiriksson” is being used for the operation which is estimated to take 61 days to complete.

The purpose of the exploration well is to prove hydrocarbon potential in the Atlas-prospect in the southern part of the licence.

Statoil will now own 30% share in the license, following the divestment.

License partners are RWE Dea Norge AS (30%, operator), Idemitsu Petroleum Norge AS (30%), Statoil Petroleum AS (30%) and, subject to regulatory approvals, GDF SUEZ (10%).
